A Night To Remember

I was sitting on the left side of the Gainesville High School auditorium with the guitar player (from the mescaline/psilocybin episode).

The Southeast Musical Festival “Battle of the Bands” was on and it was between sets.

The final band of the evening was from Georgia and they’d brought along a large contingent of helpers and supporters.

The guitarist and I took advantage of the break and went outside (by the back of the auditorium between the buildings) and smoked a number and came back to our seats.

My sister’s ex-brother-in-law who was a local policeman was there (on patrol) and I said hi and if he knew anything he didn’t let on or care.

On stage a white boy was sitting at a brown Hammond (I think) organ. A local writer or DJ was seated next to him on the organ bench and they talked privately.

The curtain was drawn and the guy at the organ was on stage by himself and finally the curtain opened and I was seeing the Allman Brothers Band for the first time.

They played great songs and the singer sang gut-wrenching blues and I remember a long, dual, guitar instrumental of Donovan’s “First There Is A Mountain.”

When it was over they were so good and obviously didn’t need the music equipment or prize money, so the organizers awarded them “Honorable Mention” and I thought the Georgia people were going to tear the place down.

It seemed kind of tense but everything got smoothed over and I went out and (it seemed like for weeks) raved about this band I’d seen and their singer who was a white boy who sounded like an old time blues singer.
